Adventures in steam bending
Tuesday, March 12, 2024
After letting the insulating foam cure overnight it’s time to try bending something!
I tossed a few pieces of scrap into the box and let it steam for an hour. From what I’ve read, it’s recommended to steam for 1 hour per inch of wood thickness.
It definitely bent. It took a reasonable amount of force to get the wood to bend, but it bent nicely rather than cracking or making terrible sounds.
I think I’ll need to construct some better curve forms, my little plywood thing with screwed-on 2x4" chunks is somewhat effective but it could use a little iterative design.
